Helping to seal its first season is Charisma Carpenter, actress popularly known for playing Cordelia Chase on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and its spin-off series Angel.

In the season finale episode entitled "Black & White and Read All Over," the whole campus will be engulfed with chaos and controversy when the entire Greek system, which includes sorority secrets and fraternity fraud, are revealed in a shocking college newspaper article. The brothers and sisters of Omega Chi, Zeta Beta Zeta, as well as Kappa Tau are raging to figure out who the undercover culprit could be. Meanwhile, after navigating some troubled waters with her boyfriend, Ashleigh (Amber Stevens) turns to Calvin (Paul James) for support and even goes so far as to hit on him, only to learn he has a secret.

As for Carpenter, she'll be heading back to college as a national sorority representative who shows up to investigate a big, juicy scandal. According to Greek creator, Sean Smith, she's might even reappear in season 2.

"She's part Scully and part Cordelia," Smith explained. "I'd love to have her back. "

Apart from Carpenter, Alan Ruch (Spin City) and Jessica Rose, who is known for her recurring role on the show as Jen K, will also appear on the season 1 ender.

For the unfamiliar, Greek stars Jacob Zachar (Rusty), Spencer Grammer (Casey), Scott Michael Foster (Cappie), Jake McDorman (Evan), Clark Duke (Dale), Dilshad Vadsaria (Rebecca), Paul James (Calvin) and Amber Stevens (Ashleigh). Set at the fictitious Cyprus-Rhodes University, the teen drama centers on a group of college students in and out of the fraternity and sorority system.

Fans can catch up on previously aired episodes when the Greek marathon begins at 12 in the afternoon today. The season finale airs tonight, September 10 at 9pm ET/PT on ABC Family.

Source: BuddyTV

Ep 12 "The Great Cappie"...

Episode 12 will be called "The Great Cappie".

Source: SpoilerTV

Is Calvin ready to come out of the fraternity?...

Thanks to BuddyTV for the following...

The first season finale of Greek will air next week, and according to actor Paul James, viewers can expect a lot from the episode, including something that involves his character revealing his homosexuality to the fraternity.

“Something happens in the tenth episode, the season finale, which has [Calvin's coming out to the fraternity] in it. I can't give away that,” Paul James told After Elton. “But the tenth episode is… very dramatic and there's a lot of stuff going on. It's like the [expletive] hits the fan pretty much. And then next season we just sort of explore what the house means to Calvin.”

Paul James' Calvin started out in the series as a gay college freshman whose coming out in high school proved traumatic. In college, he decides to keep his homosexuality a secret from his fraternity, telling only his good friend, Rusty (Jacob Zachar).

It was on the fourth episode of Greek that Calvin came out to Rusty, and although James described the episode as “beautiful,” he said he also enjoys working on the ones wherein his character's homosexuality does not take center stage.

“I really enjoy the episodes where it's just a matter of, ‘Oh, by the way, he is gay,” Paul James told After Elton. “It's not a bone of contention or this big thing that needs to be talked about. I have the most fun, when he's just a regular kid.”

With regards to accepting the role, James said he and his management were not concerned when they found out the character he was to play is gay.

“If the characters are well-written, then that's all you can hope for as an actor, especially a young actor. There's really not a lot of great parts,” James said, adding he does turn away from projects that have stereotypical characters. “There is this movie I auditioned for once… there was a gay character and it was a complete stereotype. You know, being a black guy I'm very sensitive to stereotypes… it [was] poorly written.”

Calvin, on the other hand, is far from the usual gay characters portrayed on-screen. He is not only possesses great athletic abilities, but also has a caring and supportive father, who is well aware of Calvin's homosexuality.

“Originally my father, they wrote him as not tolerant. I was arguing with Sean. I wanted to change it to being very supportive,” Paul James said. “I'm like, ‘this gives me less to act against. This gives me less to do.' He was like, ‘yeah, we've seen the whole like angry father so many times that I don't want to do that again.'”

In James' eyes, creator Sean Smith, who is openly gay, is using Calvin as a way to address his own feelings about being homosexual.

“[Sean] really is using Calvin sort of to say how he feels about being gay. Calvin is a character, but he's also sort of a little bit of a mouthpiece of what Sean has seen in his life and how he wants to portray a certain character, whereas the other characters are written purely as entertainment,” James told After Elton.

The season finale of Greek airs on Monday, September 10, on ABC Family.

Source: BuddyTV

Latest from Ausiello...

Question: Can you please give me some scoop on Greek?— Ceili

Ausiello: First off, you guys were right — this show rocks my socks off. Before I left on my little vacay, I hosted my own personal Greek marathon and now I'm caught up on the entire first season — and yes, that includes the Sept. 10 season finale (thanks, ABC Family, for the pre-screener!). And, wow, what an action-packed finale it is. (Spoiler alert) In addition to three breakups, a mole is discovered in the Omega Chi house, Calvin is betrayed by someone close to him, a major character's secret is exposed, and special guest star Charisma Carpenter predictably steals every scene she's in. I can't wait for second semester!

Source: TVguide

Ad Campaign...

Thanks to BuddyTV for the following...

While networks are seeking ways to accommodate commercials, advertisers are finding ways to slip in their brand messages directly into programming. ABC Family's Greek solves this dilemma by becoming the grounds of a multiplatform ad campaign.

Greek is a teen drama that follows the story of Rusty (Jacob Zachar), a college freshman who aspires to join a fraternity to leave his geeky high school reputation behind. The cast also includes Spencer Grammer (Casey Cartwright), Scott M. Foster (Cappie), Jake McDorman (Evan Chambers) and Paul James (Calvin Owens) among others.

Two week's ago, Greek featured the band Dollyrots perform its song “Because I'm Awesome” at a student hangout, and then caught an instant replay of the song in a Kohl's commercial as part of an ad buy estimated at just under $1 million.

Although the idea sparked from the retailer and its ad agency, McCann-Erickson, the network has been cooking up integration deals for several years now, according to ABC Family executive vice president of ad sales, Laura Nathanson.

“We were out all year saying we were open to doing these creative integrations where they made sense,” she said. “And we took the show Greek out well before it was on the air, saying we had this really interesting show, what its production timeline was and that we were really looking for the right kind of partner.”

Kohl's and its agency were among those who jumped on board. Kohl's, who decided to launch a new campaign using the Dollyrots to project a more trendy and youthful image, collaborated with the network so that the band will actually be featured and not just talked about on the show.

Earlier this season, Greek featured another integration, in which some characters went to see the movie Hot Rod and declared it amusing. The scene was the result of team up with Paramount Pictures.

“If we can do it in a way that doesn't get in the way with the way writers really would write, there's really no harm,” Nathanson said.

Fans can catch Greek every Monday at 9/8c on ABC Family.

Source: BuddyTV

BBC Three Acquires UK rights...

Thanks to BuddyTV for the following...

Earlier this month, the British cable network, BBC Three, bought the UK rights to ABC Family's new dramedy, Greek. The series is centered on the U.S. college experience and how the Greek system serves as a social minefield for the student community.

All 20 episodes of Greek's debut season have been licensed to the BBC Three by Disney-ABC International Television. Of the show, BBC Three Controller Danny Cohen said, "I'm delighted to have Greek as part of our BBC Three drama offering. It brings a very different kind of flavor to the channel, and is a further enrichment of the drama plans we're developing for the channel, including the pilots announced last month."

Disney-ABC International Television EMEA's Senior Vice President of Sales Jim Brehm added, "Greek has created a buzz in the international TV market right from launch, and we're looking forward to working with BBC Three to launch the series to the UK."

The series follows Rusty (Jacob Zachar), a recent high school graduate who is desperate to shed his reputation as a “geek.” He decides to use the Greek system of Cyprus-Rhodes University to accomplish his goal, but his journey is not without obstacles. Standing in his way is older sister, Casey (Spencer Grammer), a well-established figure in the Greek community who is determined not to let her younger brother infiltrate her world.

The cast also includes Paul James (Cold Case) as Calvin, Clark Duke (Hearts Afire) as Dale, Scott Michael Foster (The Horrible Flowers) as Cappie, Amber Stevens (Complete Savages, CSI) as Ashleigh, Jake McDorman (CSI: Miami, House) as Casey and Dilshad Vadsaria (Vanished) as Rebecca.

Created and co-executive-produced by Patrick Sean Smith (Wildfire), Greek has maintained solid ratings since its July 9 premiere. At the time BBC Three acquired the rights to the show, it was among the Top 10 cable shows in its timeslot in key demographics.

Greek airs Monday nights at 9/8c on ABC Family.

Source: BuddyTV

Black & White and Read all over...

In the first-season finale, the sororities and fraternities are reeling after a shocking exposé of the Greek system is published in the school newspaper.

Airs: 10th September 2007

Source: SpoilerTV

Latest...

Real-life fraternities and sororities have criticized ABC Family's Greek for its stereotypical depiction of the Greek life, but according to the cast and crew, the show is really more about getting the chance to start anew and finding a second family in an unfamiliar environment.

“College is the time to say nobody knows who I am. I can be whoever I want. It's liberating and exciting,” series creator Sean Smith told the Fresno Bee. “And it gives you the opportunity to try new things and, more importantly, make mistakes in doing so. I think that's something we also want to see with our characters."

Actress Spencer Grammer echoed Smith's statements, saying that a major part of the college experience is the freedom to redefine oneself.

“It's scary because you don't really know who you want to be. You are breaking rules. You are not listening to your parents,” she said. “Your parents aren't there, but you still have the cloak of being in an environment where you are being protected still. I think that's what the show is about.”

On Greek, Grammer plays Casey Cartwright, a beautiful and highly competitive sorority girl who is ready to do anything to elevate her status at Cyprus-Rhodes University's Greek system. She is dismayed when her geeky brother, Rusty (Jacob Zachar), shows up at the school, wanting to become a member of the Greek system as well. Their relationship, along with the bonds they form with their Greek brothers and sisters, is what drew executive producer Shawn Piller to the series.

"The thing that we responded to was this brother/sister relationship that was at the center of this family show and then the extension, sort of the family, brothers and sisters, in these different houses,” Piller explained. “When you go to college, it's your first time to sort of find this surrogate family of friends. And so many people are sort of half-raised by their friends as well as their family. So we just thought, what a great sort of core theme of the show to make a show about."

In line with the idea that fraternities and sororities serve as a second family, actor Paul James believes students are eager to become part of the Greek system in the hopes of finding a new support system.

"That's kind of why a lot of people join fraternities and sororities, to try to find that support system. So you are trying to find that family when you go to college,” James, who plays Calvin Owens, explained to the Fresno Bee.

Greek airs Monday nights at 9/8c on ABC Family.

Source: BuddyTV

Ask Ausiello...

Question: I. "Even though it doesn't portray the greek community, I don't think Penn State students would take a television show into high consideration and base off that if they wanted to pledge."

According to many real greek communities, Greek depicts a stereotypical image of fraternities and sororities, and neglects to present the more positive side of greek life. However, for a few others, the only major worry is that the series may discourage incoming students from signing up for the collegiate organizations.

"I'm more concerned with general recruitment seeing this on TV and having parents watching it and think that there's certain reservations they should have," Abe Glitterman, president of Delta Sigma Phi and philanthropy chair of the Interfraternity Council, said. "You run the risk of kids coming to Penn State and thinking they know what fraternities are."

Stephanie Kender, president of the Panhellenic Council and a Zeta Tau Alpha member, shares Glitterman's views.

"It's disheartening that high school students may base their decision to rush from what they see on the show," she said. "Greek life here is so diverse that you can find a lifestyle that fits yours; it's not just focused around partying."

Even Penn State students who are not involved with the university's greek community agree that although the show is entertaining, it has the potential to taint viewers' idea of the greek life.

"It's definitely funny, but a little extreme," Rebecca Ebstein, an architecture major, said. "The stigma was already there."

Michael Weaver, an accounting senior, said, “Just showing one side of everything that is greek could leave people with a really bad impression."

Glitterman feels that the stereotypical depiction of the greek life arises from the fact that the show airs on ABC Family.

"I know the prerogative of the creators of [Greek] is to give a perspective into a type of lifestyle you wouldn't otherwise know of," he said. "However, the show is deceiving because they have to make it broad enough, and that's where the stereotyping comes into play."

Source: BuddyTV

Calvin getting a love interest...

Calvin - who is in the closest - will be getting a love interest by the time the first season of Greek is over. The new series has been doing well in the ratings, with its third episode scoring high in key demographics, including females 12-34 (476,000), teens (370,000) and female teens (302,000). It drew in an average of 1 million viewers.

Greek, which premiered on ABC's sister cable network on July 9, follows its central character, Rusty (Jacob Zachar) as he attempts to erase his geeky high school persona by entering the most popular fraternity in college. Meanwhile, Rusty's older sister, Casey (Spencer Grammer), a well-established sorority member, is not too happy about his plans to infiltrate the Greek system.

Other cast members include Scott Foster as Cappie, Jake McDorma as Evan, Paul James as Calvin, Clark Duke as Dale, Amber Stevens as Ashleigh and Dilshad Vadsaria as Rebecca. The series is directed by Gil Junger (If Only) and executive-produced by Shawn Piller and Lloyd Segan.

Although Greek's ratings success is an indication of its growing following, the series has been criticized by some real-life fraternities and sororities for presenting what they believe is a “superficial” and “stereotypical” image of greek life. They insist that there is something deeper to the experience than what is seen on television, noting that their respective organizations actually focus on community service and scholarship.

"It excessively shows the primary objective of fraternity guys to be beer and girls, which is not the case at Iowa State,” Michael Cooley, a senior and fraternity member at Iowa State, explained. "If they used real greek stories and greek people in their show, then it would have the potential to be a good promoter of greek life.”

The additional episodes of Greek are scheduled to air in early 2008. Meanwhile, fans can catch more of their favorite show every Monday night at 9/8c on ABC Family.

Source: BuddyTV

Ausiello report...

Question: Please tell me you have lots of scoop on Greek and Damages. The collegiate organization said that the series depicted the greek system inaccurately, with the show's opening scene “geared towards the superficial.” As it turns out, Tri Delta is not the only collegiate group that has reacted negatively about the show.

Numerous members of the greek community in Iowa State have also voiced their disapproval of the new drama series, claiming that it represents greek life in a bad light.

"I don't like the image it portrays of the greek community. It portrays what a stereotypical greek house is," Richard Reinhardt, a Beta Sigma Psi member, said. He also pointed out that the party-loving and hazing fraternity house in Greek is a far cry from most real-life collegiate fraternities.

Michael Cooley, a senior in agriculture education and member of FarmHouse, echoed Reinhardt's sentiment.

"It excessively shows the primary objective of fraternity guys to be beer and girls, which is not the case at Iowa State,” he explained. "If they used real greek stories and greek people in their show, then it would have the potential to be a good promoter of greek life.”

According to Iowa State student, Adam Theis, the university is popular for its greek community, but claims that what ABC Family's Greek shows “is not even a minor part” in the university's greek community. He also believes that the series will eventually lose momentum, especially when they run out of ideas for future storylines.

Both Reinhardt and Cooley maintain that their respective fraternities are less about partying and more about doing work in the community. For one, Cooley said that his fraternity is focused on community service and scholarship.

Despite such negative reactions, Greek has proven to be one of ABC Family's summer breakout hits and was even the most downloaded show in iTunes last week.

Greek airs every Monday night at 9/8c on ABC Family.

Source: BuddyTV

Greek Premiere not impressive?...

ABC Family's new series, Greek, has gotten low marks from Tri Delta, a collegiate sorority that has been active since 1888. After seeing the pilot episode of the show, the organization issued a statement, voicing their opinion on how sororities have been depicted on the show.

"The behavior depicted in Greek happens in sororities as often as doctors look like McDreamy [on Grey's Anatomy]," Michelle Shimberg, international president of Tri Delta Sorority, said in a statement issued July 9. “Greek may make for good TV, but it's a far cry from reality for the vast majority of our members. Women who participate in that kind of superficial and 'mean girl' behavior are totally missing out on the true sorority experience."

The sorority expressed concern over the show's premiere episode, which for them painted an inaccurate picture of the Greek system.

"The opening scene of the show is about the sorority getting ready for recruitment and/or rush," Stacy Gillard, Tri Delta's director for marketing, said.

"The scene is geared to the very superficial... In actuality, our values do not represent that at all," Gillard added, referring to the way the show's women talked about clothing, bags and shoes.

However, Gillard pointed out that their statements have not been made in protest to the show. She said that the sorority “really wanted to be very proactive in regards to the show and have [an] opportunity to share messages about the experiences that lie in our membership and what that looks like.”

So proactive, in fact, that prior to the series premiere, the sorority said on their website that they “have offered Tri Delta as a resource for future story lines and segment plots” and that their Executive Office staff and PR firm would be “closely monitoring the marketing of the show and will track the topics covered in each episode, and are prepared and ready to respond as necessary.” A similar message was posted the following day, after the premiere episode aired on ABC Family.

Source: BuddyTV
